The state tournament brackets were released today by the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) and there weren’t any surprises to the seedings for the Lobo squads. Unlike recent state brackets, this tournament has the higher seed of each matchup hosting the games up and through the semifinal matches. The championship game will be played at a neutral site. The 3A championships will be played at Eastmark High School in southeast Mesa on March 20th.
The Lady Lobos are seeded at #2. Their lone loss this season came at the hands of the Page Sand Devils. The Page Girls team is seeded #1. In the first-round game, the Lady Lobos host #15 seed, Sabino High School. Sabino High is a public school located in Tucson. Snowflake and Sabino had one similar opponent, Safford. The Lady Lobos defeated Safford early in the season, whereas Sabino lost to Safford. The first-round game against Sabino is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, at 7pm in Snowflake.
The Lady Lobos regular season record was 15-1overall and 10-0 in region. They claimed their first regular season regional title in 10 years.
The Boys’ team will host #14 Thatcher in their first-round game on March 10 in Snowflake at 7pm. The Lobos are the #3 seed. This is a repeat matchup of a regular season game played last week in Snowflake. The Lobos defeated Thatcher on February 27, 83-64.
The Lobos only defeat this season was a 1-point loss to Winslow on February 26. Winslow leapfrogged the Lobos in the standings after that loss, taking over the #2 seed. Although both teams have identical regional records of 9-1, Winslow’s higher power ranking makes them the regular season 3A East regional champions. Snowflake won the first contest in Snowflake, 79-70 and lost the second game in Winslow, 63-64. Winslow and Snowflake could meet for a third time this season if each team makes it to the semifinal game, a game that would be played in Winslow on March 18th.
The players did hear encouraging news this week. AIA modified winter sport rules this week and will allow players to be mask-free while playing in the tournament. All coaches and players on the sideline, however, are required to wear masks. The mask mandate is still being enforced for spectators.
The Silver Creek Herald hope that the Lobos play their best in tournament and bring home state titles. The Lady Lobos last won a state title in 1997. The Boys last won state in 2015.
