Snowflake to Ban Vaping
In the April town council meeting, Snowflake began the process to update their ban on smoking on municipal property. Currently, the Town outlaws smoking of tobacco products at municipal parks and properties. The update proposed will now include the banning of vaping products. The sole exemption is the golf course which allows for the use of tobacco products while on the course.
The Town Council passed unanimously the first reading of the ordinance. The ordinance will be set for another reading in 30 days before it can be adopted. If approved, vaping will be banned at Snowflake town parks and town buildings. A similar ordinance already exists for the Town of Taylor.
In other business, the Council approved the hiring of Upfront Planning to help the town update their general plan. A general plan is a comprehensive, long-term plan for the development of the municipality. A general plan includes community goals and development policies. Pursuant to Arizona law, municipalities are required to maintain a general plan and update it periodically. Town Manager Brian Richards sent proposal requests to four different planning firms that were provided to him by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns. Two of the firms replied to his request and eventually submitted bids: Upfront Planning and Planet. The lower bid was Upfront Planning. Mayor Johnson indicated that he spoke with Upfront Planning and was impressed with its representative. Councilman Brimhall indicated that between the two proposals, he was more impressed with Upfront Planning’s presentation than Planet’s presentation. The Council approved the hiring of Upfront Planning unanimously to help the Town update its general plan.
