In their February board meeting, the Snowflake Unified School District School Board honored Donna Flake and Florine Tsosie on their retirements and accepted their resignations which take effect at the end of the school year.
Donna Flake is a 2nd grade teacher at Taylor Elementary. She is retiring after 30 years of service, 24 years as a teacher. Taylor Elementary’s principal, Jeremy Hatch, read a letter to the board wherein he shared the successes of Mrs. Flake. He said the following of Mrs. Flake: “I have been most impressed with your willingness to try new things, to jump in and be one of the first on a new project, your common sense and especially your ability to connect with the most difficult students. I have witnessed time and time again when you took a student that others may have had difficulty with and changed the relationship that that student has with the school for the better. They learned to love you, not because you were a pushover or let them get away with the negative behaviors, but because you created boundaries and set high expectations for them and most importantly you loved them.”
Florine Tsosie is a Native American Educational Aide who assists Native American students district wide. She has worked for the district for 29 years. Wilma Pete, Native American Coordinator for the district, spoke about Ms. Tsosie’s direct impact on all the students she has worked with which included her own children and now her grandchildren. “You have truly impacted our students in ways that they will use what they have learned to accomplish their future dreams. On behalf of all your students, my kids and my grandkids, thank you”, Ms. Pete wrote in a letter directed to Ms. Tsosie.
