Snowflake and Taylor Address Flood Concerns
Flood mitigation efforts continue to be addressed by the Towns of Snowflake and Taylor. Snowflake previously secured FEMA grant money to address flooding that occurs on 2nd West near the high school football field and at the Snowflake fire station. Taylor, meanwhile, began work on the south end of the industrial park to mitigate flooding for the park and nearby residents.
Snowflake has worked for several years to move forward with their project. Runoff from as high as Highland Park flows down and bottlenecks creating flooding issues near the football field.
The solution is to have the water intercepted and redirected to Cottonwood Wash. On 2nd West and 5th South, along the old railroad line, the Town has built a retention basin. That basin is part of a path that will eventually flow further west to the ditch that already exists between 4th South and School Bus Lane and empties out to Cottonwood Wash. This project should remove flooding issues that have existed at the football field and the Snowflake fire station. It is funded by a federal flood control grant with a local match.
Taylor has also been working on their own flood mitigation plans. Taylor recently settled the industrial park lawsuit and finalized the purchase of the industrial park land. In addition to promoting economic development, the land purchase has allowed Taylor to improve flood issues that have plagued the area. Behind TBS Waste, the Town has been moving earth to limit flooding in the area. This will help residents that live downstream and also make the industrial park more attractive for development.
