In heartbreaking fashion, the Lobo Basketball Teams both lost in the 3A State Finals on Saturday. The Lady Lobos faced Page in the girls’ final. They lost 32-36. Snowflake was attempting to avenge their only loss this year which came at the hands of Page back on February 13th in Page. Page led by 2 points at halftime and extended that lead to 7 points at the end of the 3rd. The 3rd quarter was tough for the Lady Lobos, only scoring 5 points in the period. They didn’t make their first field goal until 1:15 left in the period.
Page extended the lead to 11 points with 6 minutes left in the 4th. Snowflake’s defense then stepped up and Page only scored 2 more points the rest of the game. The Lobos cut it to a 3-point deficit with 28 seconds to go with a jump shot made by Emily Davis. On Page’s next possession, the Lobos needed to foul to extend the game. Snowflake’s Macee LeSueur committed a foul but the referees ruled it was not a basketball move and upped the common foul to an intentional flagrant foul. Page got two free-throw shots plus the ball, sealing the victory.
Although the squad didn’t win the state championship, they did achieve their first regional championship in 10 years. The Lady Lobos were looking for their first state championship since 1997. The last time the Lobos were in the finals was in 2006, when they lost to Monument Valley. The Snowflake Lady Lobos have a total of 6 state championships including 1977, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1991 and 1997.
Later in the day, the boys team faced Page as well in the 3A boys’ final. Page defeated Snowflake 64-51. Snowflake had an early lead in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Page took the lead and never looked back. Snowflake missed senior Stewart West for most of the first half after he committed the first two fouls of the game and sat for nearly the entire first half. Page built an 11-point lead at halftime. The Lobos cut it to 10 points at the end of the 3rd quarter and reduced Page’s lead to 7 points in the 4th but never got any closer.
Coach Andy Wood stated the following about his Lobo basketball team: “It was an amazing season and an amazing group of young men that I felt represented our school and community very well. They all cared for each other and got along while pushing each other to be better”.
The boys team last won the state championship in 2015. Previous championships include 1982, 1984, and 1989.
