Obituary: Carvel Roy Solomon

Carvel Roy Solomon, 83, passed away at his home in Snowflake, Arizona, on January 22, 2021. Carvel was born on September 6, 1937, in Winslow, Arizona, to Pearl Bates Solomon and William Roy Solomon, the oldest of their eight children. 

When he was 13 years old, his father was killed in a tragic accident and Carvel learned responsibility at a young age, helping his widowed mother support the family.  It was during his teenage years that the Hatch brothers, Trapper and Reed, taught him the building skills that served him well throughout his life. 

He graduated from Snowflake High School where he excelled in academics and athletics. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Northwestern States mission. In 1961, Carvel married Cleone Flake in the Mesa Arizona temple and to this eternal union, eight children were born.

After graduating from ASU, he began his teaching career at Snowflake-Taylor Jr High School, where over the next 34 years he taught math and science to thousands of kids. 
When he wasn't building minds, he was building houses.  Many families in the Snowflake-Taylor area have benefited from his knowledge of construction, which he passed on to his seven sons.

After his retirement from teaching, he and Cleone filled a mission to the Canada Toronto West mission, serving in Tillsonburg and surrounding towns where they made many good friends. They loved traveling - mostly on cruises - and saw much of the world after his retirement.

He was active in the community and served willingly and faithfully in the Church throughout his life.  He "did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness." (Alma 57:21) Carvel is survived by Cleone, his wife of 59 years, sons Brad, Rob, Kay (Rhonda), Nolan (Jodi), Sterling (Michelle), Joseph, Steve (Melissa) and daughter Lori (Lendon) Whetten, 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brothers Gary, Curtis, Ronald and Roy, and sisters Alice Franco Wethington and Laree Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Pearl Solomon, his brother Bill, and granddaughter Taylor Kay Whetten. 

The Solomon family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Rinda, Pam, Ezra and Yolanda from Accord Hospice for their excellent care. There will be a viewing on Saturday, January 30th at 1:00 pm at the Snowflake Main Street Chapel, with funeral services at 2:00 pm.  Interment will follow at the Mike Ramsey Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake.  Social distancing and face coverings are requested for those attending the viewing and services.
